The Household Count
How to find each other
The people in the house may not be in the same room when a warning arrives. Write an out-of-town contact, an in-case-of-emergency contact, and four meeting places. Use those same names on the fridge card and the wallet card.
Send a text before a voice call. A text may get through when a call does not. Name the person who sends it. The four places are a neighborhood place, a place just outside the home, a place outside the neighborhood, and a place out of town. School, childcare, and work each get a pickup line when someone is usually there.
A house with no car still writes how it will leave, and who to call. A house with a car keeps the tank at least half full, fills it if an evacuation seems likely, and takes one car for the family. Write two destinations in different directions. Shut off water, gas, or electricity only when officials instruct you to. Those lines are from Ready.gov’s evacuation page, updated 20 March 2026.
Ready.gov publishes a free family communication card in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese. Use that card in the language this house needs. This file is not a translation of it. Copy the poison-control number from the current card onto sheet 3. This chapter does not print one. Leave account numbers off the sheet. Both cards include 911.
The reunion lines are on sheet 3. The cards are the fridge page.
Fiction. Not your house.
The apartment sample uses the same four place-names and invents no address, no phone number, and no poison-control digit. One adult is often at work, so the work-pickup line is the one they would fill.
